I work with individuals with speech, language, and communication disorders of varying type and severity. Additionally, I have certification in Accent Reduction.
I like to integrate humor into speech therapy sessions as it is my firm belief that laughter is the best therapy. Humor provides a sense of relief which allows myself, as a clinician, to quickly establish a fun and trusting relationship with the client. Telling and teaching jokes can facilitate the achievement of most, if not all, speech therapy goals. The appreciation of humor requires several cognitive factors, including but not limited to; recognition of incongruity in a situation, identification of similar sound sequences, and comprehension of abstract or figurative language. Furthermore, laughter stimulates areas of the face that may be, or may have become, weakened due to development or injury. Whether working on speech sound production, expressive/receptive/pragmatic language, fluency, or execute functions, including a joke to coincide with the lesson helps to carryover and generalize skills learned. Additionally, laughter is an extremely powerful positive reinforcement. A individual is far more likely to repeat a behavior that elicits laughter. That's why we don't laugh when a kid says a bad word. Providing the positive reinforcement of positive laughter following a correct production, increases the likelihood that the individual with attempt, or produce, the target sound again. That's how I target articulation and phonological disorders. We crawl before we walk and we laugh before we talk. As speech therapists we are taught to break down a problem at it's foundation. We work on phonemes before syllables, and syllables before words, and words before phrases, and phrases before sentences, and sentences before conversations, and conversations before stories. Laughter is voice without articulation. We first have to learn to use our voice before we can speak.
