This study tests a cost-effective methodology in tactile biofeedback delivered via Speech Buddies Tools. They found strong evidence that using Speech Buddies as an intervention method improves marks.

...Articulate Technologies Inc. of San Francisco sells "Speech Buddies," a set of hand-held tools that children can use to determine where their tongues need to be to produce hard sounds such as "S," "L" and "R." The tools look like Popsicle sticks with a special tip on one end.
For the "r" sound, the tip is a wound-up coil that must be unrolled with the tongue in the same way that's needed to make the sound. Children can do this with the help of a parent (or therapist) and know that their tongue placement is correct, the company says. They can also chart their progress online.
Michelle Groen of Frankfort, Ill., says the tools have helped her 12-year-old son, who struggled for years to pronounce the "S" sound. "People would say, 'Put your tongue here, no put your tongue there,' and he was so frustrated," she recalls....
Alexey Salamini, CEO and Co-Founder of Articulate Technologies, Inc., will be presenting on Entrepreneurship in Technology at the MIT LGO Alumni Conference in San Francisco today. Salamini is an alumni of MIT's graduate program LGO (Leaders for Global Operations), which challenges a select group of students to complete dual master's degrees in Business Administration and Engineering in a two year period.

A new research study shows that Speech Buddies helped children overcome their speech difficulty faster than children who did not use these tools.
The clinical efficacy study published in the PSHA Keystater Journal concludes that the children who used Speech Buddies during speech therapy lessons achieved statistically significant mastery of their problem sound in a short-duration regimen. The children who used traditional methods of speech therapy without Speech Buddies did not.

A simple new system could make life easier for children with speech impediments. It's designed to help them pronounce sounds correctly using the sense of touch.
